How to Clear IITM BS OPPE — Complete Preparation Guide (May 2026)

OPPE is one of the most feared exams in the IITM BS program. Students who start preparing from Week 1 clear it comfortably. Here is a complete guide with the actual May 2026 OPPE schedule and preparation strategy.

What is OPPE?

OPPE stands for Online Programming and Proctored Exam. You write and run real code at a registered exam centre under a proctor. There are two rounds — OPPE 1 and OPPE 2.

Courses with OPPE in DS Programme:

  • Foundation Level — **Python**
  • Diploma Level — **Java, DBMS, PDSA, MLP, SC**
  • Degree Level — **C Programming, Big Data, ML-OPS**
  • Courses with OPPE in ES Programme:

  • Foundation Level — **C Programming, Linux**
  • Diploma Level — **Python**
  • Degree Level — **DBMS, PDSA, Java, MLP**

  • SCT Must Be Done First

SCT (Student Competency Test) is mandatory before OPPE. If SCT is not completed, OPPE will not be conducted for your course.

SCT Windows — May 2026 Term:

  • Window 1 — June 1 to June 5, 2026
  • Window 2 — June 11 to June 15, 2026
  • Window 3 — July 21 to July 26, 2026
  • Complete SCT in Window 1 or 2. Window 3 is just before OPPE — don't cut it that close.

    OPPE 1 Dates — August 2026

    Day 1 — Saturday, August 1, 2026

  • Foundation Level — Python
  • Diploma — MLP
  • Degree — C Programming
  • Day 2 — Sunday, August 2, 2026

  • Foundation Level — Python
  • Diploma — Java, TDS (ROE)
  • Degree — ML-OPS
  • OPPE 1 Results — August 7 to August 12, 2026

    OPPE 2 Dates — August–September 2026

    Day 1 — Saturday, August 29, 2026

  • Diploma — SC, DBMS
  • Degree (DS) — C Programming
  • Day 2 — Sunday, August 30, 2026

  • Diploma — DBMS, PDSA, Java, MLP
  • Foundation (ES) — C Programming
  • Day 3 — Saturday, September 5, 2026

  • Diploma — SC
  • Foundation Level — Python
  • Day 4 — Sunday, September 6, 2026

  • Foundation Level — Python
  • Diploma — Exceptions only (DBMS, Java, PDSA)
  • Degree — ML-OPS
  • OPPE 2 Results — September 10 to September 15, 2026

    OPPE Format

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Solve 3 to 5 coding problems with automated test cases
  • Code on an online IDE at the exam centre
  • No internet access to external sites
  • Check your course guidelines for what reference material is allowed

  • Python OPPE — How to Prepare

    Topics to cover:

  • Lists, dictionaries, sets, tuples — all operations and comprehensions
  • String manipulation — slicing, formatting, finding substrings
  • File I/O — read, write, append
  • OOP — classes, inheritance, overriding methods
  • Error handling — try, except, finally
  • Recursion and pattern problems
  • Weekly practice plan:

  • Week 1 to Week 4 — solve all GrPA problems from the course portal
  • Week 5 onwards — solve 2 fresh coding problems every day
  • Week 7 to OPPE — timed practice, 45 minutes per problem max
  • The OPPE tests the same concepts as the GrPAs. If you can solve every GrPA without looking at solutions, you can clear OPPE.

PDSA OPPE — How to Prepare

    Topics to cover:

  • Arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues — implement from scratch
  • Binary trees, BST, tree traversals (inorder, preorder, postorder)
  • Heaps — min heap, max heap
  • Graphs — BFS, DFS, Dijkstra
  • Sorting — merge sort, quick sort, heap sort
  • Dynamic programming — knapsack, LCS basics
  • Key tip: Implement every data structure by hand. Do not use Python's collections module during practice — OPPE tests your ability to build, not import.

DBMS OPPE — How to Prepare

    Topics to cover:

  • SELECT with WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY
  • All JOIN types — INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL OUTER
  • Aggregate functions — COUNT, SUM, AVG, MAX, MIN
  • Subqueries and nested queries
  • Window functions — RANK, ROW_NUMBER, DENSE_RANK
  • DDL — CREATE TABLE, ALTER, DROP
  • Practice: Solve HackerRank SQL problems (Easy to Medium). Write queries without autocomplete to build recall.

Java OPPE — How to Prepare

    Topics to cover:

  • OOP — classes, objects, constructors, inheritance, polymorphism
  • Interfaces and abstract classes
  • Collections — ArrayList, HashMap, LinkedList
  • Exception handling
  • File I/O basics

  • On the Day of OPPE

  • Reach the exam centre 30 minutes early
  • Read all problems before starting — pick the easiest first
  • Test every solution with your own edge cases before submitting
  • If stuck on one problem, skip it and return — don't waste all 3 hours on one question
  • Time yourself: roughly 50 to 60 minutes per problem
